Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS) of the United States Navy Admiral Michael Mullen visits RUC
The United States Navy Admiral Michael Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS), visited RUC on July 10th, and delivered a speech titled “Cooperative Security and Regional Stability in Asia”.

RUC President Ji Baocheng chaired the speech. A total of more than 100 people including RUC teachers and students, as well as American teachers and students at RUC attended the meeting.

RUC President Ji Baocheng firstly extended his warm welcome to Admiral Michael Mullen, and then introduced that as one of the most important universities in China, Renmin University of China is playing a leading role in many disciplines such as economics, law, politics, sociology, management, journalism & communication and traditional Chinese classics. RUC has now partnership with 24 American universities and over 70 American students are studying at RUC. He also expressed a good will for the relationship between China and the United States.

Admiral Michael Mullen said in his speech that as the rise of China’s economy, the strengthening of its role in Asia and the deepening of its military modernization, the U.S. is increasingly paying attention to more dialogues and communication with China. He believed that China and the U.S. should enlarge each other’s transparency, establish multilevel trust, promote interaction and communication, and keep in exchanges deeply, broadly and constantly.

During the speech, Admiral Michael Mullen answered some questions raised by on-site RUC teachers and students as well as netizens through live MicroBlog, including the neighbor countries’ maneuvers in south China sea area and regional stability, American’s view on the role of China as a strategic great power, relation between Smart Power and Hard Power, influence and role of China and the U.S. in Asia Pacific region, and so on.

Before the speech, RUC President Ji Baocheng met with Admiral Michael Mullen. Major General Qian Shaohua, Director of Foreign Affairs Office, Ministry of Defense, Lieutenant General Jacoby, RUC Vice President Feng Huiling, Vice President Yang Huilin, Assistant President Liu Xiangbing, Director of International Office Tang Zhong, Dean of School of Law Han Dayuan and so on also attended the meeting.

At noon, Admiral Michael Mullen, accompanied by RUC Vice President Yang Huilin, had lunch with nearly 20 RUC students and teachers. He asked the students about their study and future plan, and also shared his experience of training at Harvard Business School.

Later in the afternoon, Admiral Michael Mullen visited RUC School of Law and School of Journalism & Communication. He was also impressed by the Cisco TelePresence of RUC School of Journalism & Communication.

At the invitation of General Chen Bingde, Chief of PLA Headquarters of the General Staff, Admiral Michael Mullen visited China. It also marked the first time for the U.S. army top leaders to visit a Chinese university.
